MLA Aphrodite Cup - July 27, 2022

The South Muskoka Sailing School, on McVittie Island

Sailing in Muskoka is back after a hiatus over the past two summers!  A couple of exciting regattas returned in their normal format

this year.

The South Muskoka Sailing Club hosted the Aphrodite Cup Regatta on July 27, 2002, with 35 youth sailors in attendance.  It was

amazing to see this field of competitors out in full force!   The conditions were ideal, with a beautiful medium strength south breeze

for these Club 420 sailors.  The clubs competing for the cup included the Beaumaris Yacht Club (BYC), Kettles Sailing Club (KSC), Lake

of Bays Sailing Club (LBSC), Lake Joseph Sailing Club (LJSC), Sail Parry Sound (SPS), and the South Muskoka Sailing Club (SMSC).  Sail

Parry Sound took home the coveted Aphrodite Cup.  Twins Hannah and Alyssa Abush from SPS were consistently strong, finishing

among the top three in all four races.   The host club, SMSC, performed well, with Will Kay and Alec Locklin taking second overall in

the top fleet.  Among the non-spinnaker sailors, Tommy Staples and Zach Loader from SMSC took the top spot.  The MLA sponsored a

BBQ for the sailors and provided awards celebrating the success of these youth athletes.

MLA Sailing Regatta - July 31, 2022

Beaumaris Yacht Club

The MLA Sailing Regatta was held on the Sunday of the August long weekend, which is a long-standing tradition that we are excited

to see return in the usual format.   The regatta is open to all ages and all classes of sailboats.  This year, there were 48 sailors out on

the course, ranging in age from 9 to 60, in 6 different classes of boats.   The South Muskoka Sailing Club won the Commodore’s Cup

with top results in Catamaran, Keelboat, and the hotly contested youth Club 420 fleet.  The Cavell family from Muskoka Lakes Golf &

Country Club certainly made their mark on this event.  Brothers, Kirk and Baker, dominated the competitive Laser fleet, with a first and

third place finish respectively.  However, it was 9 year old Hudson Cavell, who sails competitively at his home in West Palm Beach,

that stole the show, leading the youth Pico fleet from start to finish in each of the four races.  BYC was a wonderful host, allowing

MLA to use their property and facilities for the event, and generously provided a BBQ for participants and spectators.
